Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Preparation for 2027: Food, Packing List, Fitness Guide and More

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Preparation for 2027: Food, Packing List, Fitness Guide and More

The walk around Mount Kailash is 52 km, and you cover about 38 km of it on foot over three days, between roughly 4,700 m and 5,645 m. Often the difference between a hard day and a happy one is how early you started preparing. The good news is that preparation is something you control, from how you train to what you eat and pack.

Here is what surprises first-timers. They arrive worried about the walk, and many leave worried about their weight, because the vegetarian food on this yatra is so good. Some guests have even asked to take our cook home with them.

This guide to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation covers the three things that decide how your yatra feels: your body, your gear and your food. We have organised pilgrimages to Kailash since 1999, so we will tell you what works, what doesn’t and exactly where we step in to look after you.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Preparation Quick Facts

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation means training your legs and lungs for about three months, packing warm layers, and trusting expert cooks and guides on the ground.

You need no health certificate to enrol, but you must be healthy, with any conditions well controlled. Expect temperatures from about -5 to 12 degrees Celsius and expect every meal to be vegetarian.

  • Start training: About 3 months before departure
  • Daily base: Walk or jog about 5 km (3 miles)
  • Food: North and South Indian vegetarian meals from our expedition cooks
  • Pricing: Contact our team for a personalised plan

What Does Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Preparation Actually Involve?

Think of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation as four jobs, and do them in this order:

  1. Check your health: See your doctor and be honest about the altitude.
  2. Train your body: You can train your body by walking, stairs, hiking and breathing practice.
  3. Train your mind: Training your mind is equally important a training your body. You can do it with patience, pacing and quiet.
  4. Sort your gear: Make sure to carry your layers, boots and a few essentials, with some items supplied by us.

Most people start with gear because shopping is easy. We suggest you start with your legs, because boots can be bought in a weekend and fitness cannot.

Our short page on Kailash Yatra preparation exercise gives the quick version. This guide gives you the full picture.

Who Is Healthy Enough to Join the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation begins with an honest health check. At the highest point of the kora, the air carries roughly half the oxygen pressure of sea level, so your heart and lungs do the real work.

Do You Need a Health Certificate to Join the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

No. We do not ask for a medical certificate to enrol you. We do ask that you are healthy, mentally and physically, because this is an extraordinary journey and the mountain does not negotiate.

We still strongly recommend a check-up before you book, and our equipment list says the same. The goal is simple: no surprises at 5,000 m.

What if You Have Asthma or High Blood Pressure?

Conditions such as asthma and high blood pressure must be well controlled before you travel. Tell your doctor that you will sleep above 4,500 m and cross a pass higher than 5,600 m, then tell us what they said.

We would rather have an honest conversation at booking than a difficult one on the trail. This is general guidance, not medical advice, so follow your doctor’s instructions.

For more, read how difficult the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra really is and the requirements for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

How Do You Train for the Kailash Parikrama?

Physical training is the biggest part of your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation, and it doesn’t need to be fancy. You are training to walk steadily for many hours, not to sprint.

How Long Before the Yatra Should You Start Training?

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra fitness training should start about three months before you fly, as our preparation page advises. A gradual build lowers the chance of injury and gives you time to notice weak spots such as knees and ankles.

What Is a Simple 12-Week Plan for the Kora?

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: Walk or jog about 5 km (3 miles) a day. Keep it easy; you are building a habit.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: Add stair walking and one weekend hike each week.
  3. Weeks 9 to 12: Hike with a weighted day pack for 4 to 6 hours at the weekend.
  4. Every day: Yoga, pranayama or breathing practice, plus a few minutes of meditation.

Two details from our years on the kora are worth adding. Train in the early morning a few times, because kora days start before sunrise. Practise with trekking poles, so your rhythm is ready before you arrive.

Stair walking matters most for the long descent from Dolma La, where tired knees take the strain. If you can walk down 20 flights without wincing, your legs are in good shape.

How Do You Prepare Mentally for the Kora?

Day 11 is long, and some of it will feel slow. Decide in advance that slow is fine.

Meditation or quiet breathing helps because it teaches you to stay calm when you are breathless.

For pacing advice, see our tips for completing the Holy Mount Kailash Parikrama and the complete guide to the Mount Kailash kora.

What Food Do You Eat on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Every meal is vegetarian, North or South Indian, cooked fresh by our expedition cooks. The food is hygienic, tasty and balanced, because you burn a lot of energy walking at altitude.

Food is the easiest part of your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation, because we handle it.

Is the Food on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Vegetarian?

Yes. Once the yatra begins in Tibet, every meal is vegetarian. On our China route, that means from Lhasa onwards, with North and South Indian options throughout the programme.

What Does a Typical Day of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Food Look Like?

On our Ultra Luxury programme, you get full board: breakfast, lunch, dinner and two teas. We carry the kitchen with the group, with a supporting truck for luggage and food.

Your cook builds the menu around North and South Indian favourites, and the team adjusts to what your group enjoys. You never need to find a restaurant on the Tibetan plateau.

How Do We Keep You Hydrated?

We arrange hot and cold water for you during meals and on the trail, and we remind you to keep sipping. At altitude, dehydration makes headaches worse, so steady drinking is part of the plan.

Carry an insulated bottle so your water does not freeze. Your guide will point out when it is time to top up.

Will You Really Put On Weight on a Pilgrimage?

Guests often tell us they came to lose weight and left with a few extra kilos. They blame the cooks, and some ask for them to come home too.

We take it as a compliment. A balanced diet keeps you strong over three long days on the kora.

Which Snacks Should You Still Bring?

Pack a few favourites for the trail: dry fruits, nuts, chocolates and electrolyte powders. They help on the long climb to Dolma La, when lunch feels far away.

What Should You Pack as Part of Your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Preparation?

A good Kailash Mansarovar Yatra packing list is short, warm and waterproof. Pack in layers, because temperatures swing from about -5 to 12 degrees Celsius and the weather changes quickly.

What Does Earthbound Expeditions Provide Free of Charge?

We supply the bulkiest and most expensive items, so you do not have to buy them:

  • A duffel bag for your main luggage
  • A down jacket
  • A rain coat or poncho
  • A warm cap (topi) and a beanie
  • Walking poles
  • Toilet paper
  • A medical box carried by our team

On our Ultra Luxury programme, we also provide sleeping bags, tents, mattresses and a shower tent for the holy bath at Lake Mansarovar.

Ask us which items come with your package, because the list varies by itinerary.

What Should You Pack Yourself for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

These are the things to carry for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra that you bring yourself:

  • Clothing: 2 to 3 sets of thermals, 1 to 2 waterproof and windproof trekking pants, quick-dry shirts, 4 to 5 pairs of thick woollen socks, and 2 to 3 comfortable tracksuits for the guesthouse
  • Hands and head: Waterproof snow gloves plus warm woollen gloves, a sun hat and a neck buff
  • Footwear: Waterproof Gore-Tex boots with high ankle support, plus light shoes or sandals for indoors
  • Bags: A 40 to 50 L day pack with a rain cover
  • Sun and light: 100 per cent UV sunglasses, SPF 50 plus sunscreen, SPF lip balm and a headlamp with spare batteries
  • Power: A power bank of 20,000 mAh or more, a camera and a universal charger
  • Small items: A padlock, ziplock bags, a quick-dry towel, wet wipes and biodegradable soap
  • Medical: Personal medicines, blister treatment and a basic first-aid kit
  • Documents and cash: A passport with at least 8 months of validity, plus some Chinese yuan

Break in your boots for at least a month, on the same hikes you use for training. Keep your passport and cash in a small waterproof pouch close to your body.

What Is the Weather Like on the Kailash Parikrama?

Expect roughly -5 to 12 degrees Celsius, with strong sun and sudden changes. Sunglasses and sunscreen matter even when it is cold, because glare at altitude is fierce.

Can You Buy Missing Items in Kathmandu?

Yes. Many items can be bought in Kathmandu, so a forgotten glove is not a disaster. You can also leave your suitcase at the hotel in Kathmandu or Lhasa and repack into our duffel bag.

Where Can You Watch Our Gear Guide?

We have made a YouTube video about Kailash gear that walks through the items one by one. For the complete checklist, see our Kailash tour equipment list.

How Should You Handle Altitude on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Altitude should shape your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation more than gym strength does. A strong person who climbs too fast can feel worse than a fit, patient one.

Our programmes gain height gradually. On our Ultra Luxury route you sleep at about 3,650 m in Lhasa, 3,950 to 3,980 m in Gyantse and Shigatse, and 4,550 m at Saga and Lake Mansarovar. You then reach Darchen at 4,700 m before the kora begins.

Three habits help most:

  • Walk slowly and breathe steadily: Pace beats power on this mountain.
  • Drink water and sleep well: Both protect you from headaches.
  • Speak up early: Tell your guide at the first headache or nausea.

On our Ultra Luxury programme we carry an oxygen bag and a Gamow bag. If symptoms worsen, going down is the most reliable treatment, and we make that call together with you.

Speak to your doctor about altitude medication, and read Important Info for Tibet Travel and our page on Lake Mansarovar.

How Should Your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Preparation Look, Month by Month?

  1. Three months out: Start training and book your doctor’s visit.
  2. Two months out: Start breaking in your boots and check that your passport has at least 8 months of validity.
  3. One month out: Confirm your travel insurance and finish your packing list. If you travel via China, send us your visa copy at least three weeks before departure.
  4. Two weeks out: Pack your day pack, arrange some Chinese yuan and test your headlamp and power bank.
  5. One week out: Ease off heavy training, sleep well and hydrate.

For documents and visas, see the requirements for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and our group visa information.

How Do We Look After You, Step by Step?

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation is only half the story; the other half is who walks beside you.

We look after you the way we would look after our own family: with a smile, genuine care, a friendly team and your safety as our first and only priority.

Here is exactly what that means at each stage:

  1. Before you book, honest advice: We help with your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation from the first call. We tell you which package suits your fitness and which routes are open, including what changed after the August 2026 flood (read our 2027 routes and flood update).
  2. After you book, paperwork off your shoulders: We handle your Tibet permit and, where needed, the group visa. If you travel via China, you send your visa copy and we apply for the permit.
  3. On arrival, a face you recognise: Our guide meets you at the airport, takes you to your hotel and briefs you in the evening. On the China route, we hand your permit to you at your hotel in Beijing.
  4. On the road, expert guides and private vehicles: You travel with an English-speaking guide and a Tibetan Travel Bureau-approved guide in Tibet. Long drives include plenty of stops, and lunch is arranged on the way.
  5. At Lake Mansarovar, a rest day and a warm holy bath: On our Ultra Luxury programme you rest for puja and havan, and we provide warm lake water in a bathing tent. The cold should not take the joy out of the moment.
  6. On the kora, your own pace: Yaks and yakmen carry supplies, and porters carry your main bag, so you only need a small day pack. You can walk, ride a horse, take a jeep for the final stretch, or go up to the north face and return while the group finishes.
  7. At the North Face, an extra day for Charan Sparsh: On our Inner Kailash programme we add a day for the walk to touch the feet of Kailash. We add it because it matters to pilgrims.
  8. At every meal, hot, fresh and vegetarian: Our cook and team travel with you, so you eat well even at 5,000 m.
  9. At altitude, a plan: We carry a medical box, and on Ultra Luxury an oxygen bag and a Gamow bag. Your guides watch for signs of trouble and decide with you when to slow down or descend.
  10. When plans change, calm flexibility: During the August 2026 flood, 28 yatris who were already near Kailash finished the yatra and went home safely. We change routes, not promises.
  11. At the end, a gentle landing: On Ultra Luxury your yatra finishes in Kathmandu with a full day of sightseeing and a Nepali cultural show and dinner.

What Makes Earthbound Expeditions Different?

Here is what you can check for yourself before trusting us with your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra preparation:

  • 27 years of operating, since 1999, from our office in Thamel, Kathmandu
  • 780 plus five-star reviews on TripAdvisor, plus our testimonials page
  • A direct operator run by local experts, with certificates you can view and a team you can meet
  • First-hand experience. In 2000, Rajan Simkhada walked 640 km to Kailash in 33 days, long before the route became popular
  • Four departures on this style of route this year, run by the same team that will look after you

We are not saying other operators cannot do good work. Some agencies based in China may quote lower, but meals are not always vegetarian and the level of personal care can vary, which matters at 5,000 m. Our Nepali team is built around Indian vegetarian food, a larger support staff and the hospitality Nepal is known for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can diabetic patients do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Many people with diabetes travel at altitude, but only with their doctor’s approval and well-controlled blood sugar. Tell us when you enquire, carry your medicines and supplies in your day pack, and inform your guide. This is general guidance, not medical advice.

Is Jain food available on the yatra?

Tell our team about Jain or any other dietary needs when you book. All meals are already vegetarian, and we will tell you plainly what our cooks can arrange on your departure.

Can I carry my own food into Tibet?

Dry fruits, nuts and chocolates are fine for your day pack. Rules on fresh and packaged food can change at the border, so ask us before you pack anything beyond snacks.

Can I take photographs at monasteries and on the kora?

Photography is welcome on the trail and at most viewpoints. Many monasteries restrict photos inside, so ask your guide before you raise your camera. Drones are generally not permitted in Tibet, so leave yours at home.

What are the symptoms of altitude sickness on the Kailash yatra?

Common signs are headache, nausea, dizziness, poor sleep and breathlessness at rest. Tell your guide at the first symptom rather than waiting. Going down is the most reliable treatment, and we make that call together with you.

Should I take Diamox for Kailash?

Ask your doctor. Our equipment list names Diamox as something to discuss with a doctor, not a medicine we prescribe. Never try a new medicine for the first time at 5,000 m.

Can I charge my phone during the parikrama?

Bring a power bank of 20,000 mAh or more and a universal charger. Charging points are limited on the kora, so keep your devices warm and use airplane mode to save battery.

Are there toilets on the Kailash kora?

Facilities at the holy sites and on the kora are basic, and guesthouse rooms are shared. We supply toilet paper, and we suggest you carry wet wipes and hand sanitiser.

Do I need Chinese yuan on the yatra?

Carry some yuan for a private horse or porter, souvenirs, the visa fee and tips for Tibetan staff. Ask us for a sensible amount based on your plans.

Is there an age limit for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

We do not state a fixed age limit, because fitness, health and attitude matter more. Many older pilgrims complete the kora on horseback, and a half kora to the north face is possible. Talk to your doctor and our team before booking.
