Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu 2027: Pros, Cons, Route and Inclusions

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu 2027: Pros, Cons, Route and Inclusions

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu follows the road that pilgrims have driven for decades. You leave Kathmandu, cross into Tibet at Kodari and Zhangmu, climb to Nyalam, and continue west through Saga to Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash. Then you return the same way, all overland.

After the August 2026 flood, one question reached our inbox again and again: is the road still open? Yes, it is. One river corridor of Bhotekohsi / Trishuli was damaged, but the other traditional route was not damaged. Actually, the Aug. 2026 Nepal flood mainly affected the Kyirong and Rasuwa area, not Lhasa or the other entry road to Kailash, so bookings are open for 2027 Kailash tours. Even now, a new route via Korola Pass is being considered, which goes via the Muktinath Mustang area of Nepal following the Kaligandaki River Valley corridor. The Korala Pass via Mustang is proposed and undergoing discussions to open as a new route for Kailash trips, so stay tuned.

Our Earthbound Expeditions team is a Kathmandu-based direct operator that has led Kailash pilgrimages since 1999. This Kailash tour guide covers the route, the real distance, the pros and cons, what the 2027 package includes and how to choose who walks beside you. We won’t sugarcoat the difficulty, because you deserve to arrive prepared.

How Long is the Kailash Overland Yatra, and What Does it Include?

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu is a 14-day overland pilgrimage. You drive through Kodari, Zhangmu, Nyalam and Saga to Lake Mansarovar and Darchen, walk the 52 km Kailash parikrama over three days, and drive back to Kathmandu.

Your visa, permits, guide, meals and transport are all arranged by our team.

  • Duration: 14 days, Kathmandu to Kathmandu
  • Highest point: Drolma La Pass, about 5,630 m
  • Grade: Moderate, with high altitude throughout
  • Best season: May to September
  • Paperwork: We arrange your Chinese group visa and Tibet permit in Kathmandu

What is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu?

It is the classic “Kathmandu in, Kathmandu out” pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in western Tibet. You travel by private bus on one continuous road, with no gateway city in China and no flights over the plateau.

Most of our pilgrims choose this Kailash overland tour from Kathmandu route because it is the shortest and the most familiar.

Mount Kailash rises to 6,638 m and has never been climbed. Hindus see it as the home of Lord Shiva, Buddhists as the home of Avalokiteshvara, and Jains and followers of Bon also hold it sacred.

Pilgrims walk around the mountain instead, and they bathe in Lake Mansarovar, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world.

You can read more about the mountain in our Kailash Parvat guide and about the lake in our Lake Mansarovar guide.

Is the overland route to Kailash safe after the August 2026 flood?

Yes. The flood damaged one river corridor only: the Trishuli Valley road through Rasuwagadhi to Kerung (Kyirong). That border crossing is temporarily suspended while repairs continue.

The traditional Kailash Yatra route Kodari to Zhangmu runs through a different valley, and it is open. We are using it for our Kailash Yatra 2027 departures. We consider it the safest and most trusted way to reach Kailash, and it is the route most pilgrims prefer.

Why do we trust it? Operators have run this road for years, so the hotels, guesthouses and border formalities are well established. Our crew knows every stop, every pass and every tea house along the way. When the flood struck in Aug. 2026, our 28 yatris who were already in Tibet completed their yatra and returned home safely.

We still stay honest about the Himalaya. Monsoon rain can trigger landslides on any mountain road, so we monitor conditions daily, start our drives early and keep buffer time in your plan.

How Far is Kailash Mansarovar from Kathmandu? Distance and Day-by-Day Route

Kathmandu to Darchen, the base of Mount Kailash, is roughly 800 to 900 km by road.

You cover it in three long driving days, with an acclimatisation day at Nyalam and a short final hop to Darchen. Lake Mansarovar comes first, on day 7 of our programme.

Leg Approx. distance Drive time
Kathmandu to Nyalam (via Kodari and Zhangmu) 150 km 7 to 8 hours, including the border crossing
Nyalam to Saga 250 km 6 to 7 hours
Saga to Lake Mansarovar 370 km 7 to 8 hours
Lake Mansarovar to Darchen 40 km A short drive

Distances are approximate, and published figures differ by a few kilometres between operators.

Here is how your 14-day Kailash overland Yatra unfolds:

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,350 m), meet our team and attend a trip briefing.

Day 2: Visit Swayambhunath, Budhanilkantha and Pashupatinath.

Day 3: See Doleshwar Mahadev and Bhaktapur, or rest at Dhulikhel.

Day 4: Drive to Kodari, cross into Tibet at Zhangmu and sleep at Nyalam (3,700 m).

Day 5: Take an acclimatisation hike around Nyalam.

Day 6: Drive to Saga.

Day 7: Drive to Lake Mansarovar (4,550 m), with your first view of Kailash at Horchu.

Day 8: Perform puja, havan and the holy bath, then continue to Darchen (4,575 m).

Day 9: Drive to Tharboche and walk to Diraphuk (4,920 m) on kora day 1.

Day 10: Cross Drolma La (about 5,630 m) to Zuthulphuk on kora day 2.

Day 11: Walk out to Darchen on Kora Day 3, then drive to Saga.

Day 12: Drive from Saga to Nyalam.

Day 13: Cross the border and drive to Kathmandu.

Day 14: Fly home, or visit Pashupatinath once more.

We suggest keeping one spare day in your travel plans for flight changes.

You can see every stop in our 14-day overland itinerary, and our Mount Kailash kora guide explains the circuit step by step.

How Do We Use Your Waiting Days in Kathmandu?

Every yatra from Kathmandu includes a short wait. Your Chinese group visa takes about three full working days, and we apply for it on a Monday. So please land late on Sunday or before 9 AM on Monday.

We don’t let those days go to waste. They are part of your acclimatisation and your preparation.

  • Day 1: We welcome you at the airport, settle you into your hotel and hold an evening briefing.
  • Day 2: You visit Swayambhunath, Budhanilkantha and Pashupatinath, the great temple of Lord Shiva. It is a fitting start to a Shiva pilgrimage.
  • Day 3: You explore Bhaktapur and Doleshwar Mahadev, or spend a night at Dhulikhel for a gentle gain in height.

Along the way, our guides teach you how to pace yourself, drink enough water and spot early altitude symptoms. We also run light stretching, breathing and meditation sessions, and we check your gear with you. You leave Kathmandu rested and ready, not restless.

Already holding a visa? If you get your Chinese tourist visa at home, for example in the USA, UK or India, send us a copy and we apply for your Tibet permit in advance. Your wait shrinks, and the yatra can run in 13 days.

Arriving early? Use your spare days for Janakpur, the birthplace of Sita, or for Muktinath, one of the most sacred sites for Hindus and Buddhists. See our Janakpur guide, Muktinath temple guide and Kailash with Muktinath package. We plan these extras around your visa dates so nothing feels rushed.

What are the Pros of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu?

The route has five clear strengths, and each one matters on a long pilgrimage:

  • Fewer moving parts: You avoid flights into China and extra gateway-city hotels, so there is less to book and less to go wrong.
  • Shortest programme: At 14 days, it is shorter than our 15-day and 16-day alternatives.
  • Gradual altitude gain: You climb by road, not by a two-hour flight. A rest day at Nyalam gives your body time to adjust before the plateau.
  • Simple paperwork: We handle the group visa and Tibet permit in Kathmandu, so you don’t need a Chinese visa before you fly.
  • A proven road: It is the most-travelled Kailash route, with established stops and crews who know them well.

What are the Cons, and How Hard is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu?

It is a moderate trek at very high altitude, and it asks a lot of your body.

Here are the challenges we want you to know about early:

  • Long road days: Expect 6 to 8 hours in the bus, with dust and rough patches.
  • Altitude: You stay above 4,500 m for most of your time in Tibet. Headaches, poor sleep and low appetite are common.
  • The toughest day: Kora day 2 climbs to Drolma La at about 5,630 m, then descends for hours. Most yatris finish, but nobody finds it easy.
  • Simple lodging: Guesthouses at Mansarovar, Diraphuk and Zuthulphuk are basic.
  • No guarantee at the north face: Walking on to Charan Sparsh (touching Kailash) depends on weather, your health and Chinese military permission.
  • Monsoon risk: Landslides can slow your drives in July and August.

If you can’t complete the full circuit, you can still walk up to the north face at Diraphuk, do your puja and wait at Darchen while the group finishes.

When is the best time to go, and what are the 2027 dates?

The best window for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu runs from May to September, when the weather is relatively stable and the passes are open. June and July bring clear skies, while August and early September give good visibility for the parikrama.

Our 2027 group departures, each lasting 14 days, are:

  • 11 to 24 May (full moon, full)
  • 16 to 29 May (full)
  • 25 May to 7 June (full)
  • 8 to 21 June (full moon)
  • 20 June to 3 July
  • 29 June to 12 July
  • 4 to 17 July
  • 11 to 24 July (full moon)
  • 18 to 31 July
  • 8 to 21 August, 9 to 22 August and 10 to 23 August (full moon)
  • 6 to 19 September and 8 to 21 September (full moon)

Why choose a full moon departure?

A moonlit night beside Lake Mansarovar is unforgettable, and many pilgrims believe the apsaras and Goddess Parvati bathe in the lake after dark. If you reach Tharboche during the Saga Dawa festival, you may also see the celebrations.

We can’t promise clear skies on any date, and full moon departures fill first. Private departures are possible for your family, friends, mandir or community. See our 2027 dates and booking page to check availability.

Is this a Luxury Kailash Mansarovar Yatra? What Comfort and Care to Expect

It is a luxury pilgrimage in how we look after you, not in every room you sleep in. In Kathmandu, you stay in a 5-star hotel. In Tibet you stay in the best guesthouses available, and they are simple.

Our comfort comes from preparation and people:

  • Private transport: You travel by private bus, with extra emergency vehicles always following the group.
  • A large support team: We keep a staff-to-guest ratio of 4:1, so help is always close.
  • Safety equipment: We carry oxygen cylinders, PAC bags, oximeters and blood pressure meters.
  • Delicious hot food: Our cooks serve porridge, paratha, dal, rajma, khichadi, rasam, pasta, soup and masala chai, all vegetarian, North and South Indian.
  • Sacred comforts: We set up shower tents with warm lake water for your holy bath, and we conduct puja and havan on the shore of Mansarovar.

Think of us as your guardians on the roof of the world. We greet you with a smile every morning, we watch your hydration and your breathing, and we celebrate every step you take. Your safety is our first priority, and our only motive is to see you complete your yatra comfortably and return home well.

Guests say it better than we can. One yatri from Australia wrote that we treated their group like family. That is how Earthbound Expeditions has worked since 1999, and you can read more about us and Earthbound or browse our Testimonials and TripAdvisor reviews.

How do you Choose a Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Operator?

When you compare companies for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu, start with who actually runs your trip.

We are a direct operator, not a commission-based booking agent, and our team leaders have made this journey many times. Some operators run groups of 80 to 100 people. We keep our groups small so every yatri gets personal attention.

Then ask every company these questions:

  • Who runs the trip on the ground? Ask for the names of the guide, the cook and the team leader.
  • How many staff travel with the group? A higher ratio means faster help at altitude.
  • Are all meals vegetarian, and who cooks them?
  • Is the guide approved by the Tibetan Travel Bureau (TTB)?
  • What is the oxygen and emergency plan?
  • Can you read recent, verifiable reviews? We have more than 850 five-star reviews on TripAdvisor.
  • Who handles your visa, and what are the refund terms? You can read ours in our terms and conditions.

You can meet the people behind your trip on our About Us page, our team page and our certificates page. We are happy to answer every question before you book.

Which Route Should You Choose: Kathmandu Overland, via China, via Lhasa or Express?

The right route depends on where you start and how many days you have. This table compares our four main Kailash programmes:

Route Days Best for
Kathmandu overland (Kathmandu in, Kathmandu out) 14 Simplicity, a gradual climb and an easy start
Ultra Luxury: fly Beijing to Lhasa, drive to Kailash, exit to Kathmandu 15 Travellers flying straight into China
Deluxe: fly Kathmandu to Lhasa, drive to Kailash, drive back 16 Pilgrims who want to see Lhasa
Express Premium: Beijing, Lhasa and Purang by air 12 People short on time

If you can reach Kathmandu easily, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu is usually the best fit. If you are flying from the USA, UK or Australia and prefer to finish in Nepal, compare it with our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via China guide.

Our Ultra Luxury tour, Deluxe Kathmandu to Lhasa tour and Express Premium tour pages list every day.

A word on helicopter tours. No helicopter flies to Kailash itself. They land at the border town of Hilsa, and the rest is by road, so you gain height fast and risk weather delays. You can read the details on our helicopter tour page.

What Can you Add after the Yatra?

Because you finish in Kathmandu, extending your trip is easy. Earthbound Expeditions also runs Everest Base Camp, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu and Upper Mustang treks, plus tours in Tibet and Bhutan. You can browse every route at eNepal Trekking.

If you want to see Everest from the Tibetan side in the future, look at our Lhasa to Kathmandu overland tour via Everest Base Camp. For something personal, ask about our tailor-made trips on eNepal Trekking.

Frequently asked questions

What documents should I send before I arrive in Kathmandu?

Send us a clear copy of your passport, valid for at least six months. We use it to apply for your Chinese group visa and Tibet permit. Bring your original passport to Kathmandu, and take a multiple-entry Nepal visa on arrival, because you re-enter Nepal after Tibet. See our group visa information and important info for Tibet travel.

Can Indian passport holders join this departure?

Indian passport holders follow a fixed itinerary with a separate Chinese visa process through our Delhi office. We run their departures apart from other passports. Please tell us your passport type when you enquire.

How many hours do you walk each day on the Kailash parikrama?

Day 1 covers about 10 km and takes 6 to 8 hours to Diraphuk. Day 2 is the longest, at roughly 18 to 22 km and 8 to 12 hours. Day 3 is 8 to 10 km and takes 4 to 6 hours. Vehicles cover the start and end, so you walk about 38 km of the 52 km circuit.

Do I need a horse or porter on the kora?

Not necessarily. Yaks carry your main luggage, so you only need a small daypack. A horse helps on uphill sections only, so many pilgrims hire one just for the climb to Drolma La. A personal porter is also possible, and we can arrange either when you book.

What should I pack, and what will you lend me?

We lend you a sleeping bag, warm jacket, duffel bag, cap, raincoat and walking stick for the trip. You bring thermal layers, broken-in boots, sunscreen, personal medicines and a headlamp. Our Kailash tour equipment list has the full checklist.

How fit do I need to be, and when should I start training?

You need steady stamina more than speed. We suggest two to three months of brisk walks, stair climbing and hikes with a loaded daypack. Follow our Kailash yatra preparation exercise guide, and see your doctor for an altitude check before you book.

Can seniors or people with blood pressure or diabetes join?

Many older pilgrims complete the yatra. Talk to your doctor first, and share your medical history and medications with us when you book. Our team carries oximeters and blood pressure meters, checks your oxygen daily and adjusts your pace.

What if a landslide or border delay holds up our return?

We stay in contact with local teams and adjust the plan on the day. Extra hotel nights and other costs from unavoidable delays are not part of the package. Keep your onward flights flexible, and read our terms and conditions for details.

Is travel insurance required?

We strongly recommend it. Choose a policy that covers high-altitude trekking up to at least 5,700 m and emergency evacuation. Evacuation costs are not included in our package.

Can I book a private Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for my family or temple group?

Yes. We can run a private departure for friends, family, a mandir, a yoga retreat or a spiritual group, and we can customise the itinerary around your interests. Write to us with your dates and group size.
