Rajan started taking pilgrimage to Kailash since 1999. In the year 2000, long before travelling to the Kailash Manasarovar region became the journey it is today, Rajan undertook an extraordinary expedition with two American geologists. Rather than simply travelling to Kailash by modern transport, he walked the entire route through some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes of Nepal and Tibet.

The expedition lasted approximately 33 days, taking Rajan from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then to Simikot and onward on foot through the Karnali River Valley toward the Nepal–Tibet border. From there, the journey continued around Rakshas Lake and into the sacred Kailash Manasarovar region, including Lake Manasarovar itself.

The return journey took the group over the Gurla Pass to Taklakot, through the remote Limi Valley, and finally back to Simikot.

It was an extraordinary expedition—and one that gave Rajan an intimate understanding of Kailash Manasarovar that few people can claim.

A Route Walked, Not Simply Visited

There is a profound difference between visiting a destination and walking your way to it.

Rajan experienced Kailash step by step.

From the mountains around Simikot, the expedition followed the great Karnali River and its valley, gradually making its way toward the Tibetan plateau. The journey passed through remote terrain where roads and modern infrastructure were limited, requiring careful planning, endurance and a deep understanding of the Himalayan environment.

After reaching the border, the expedition continued toward Rakshas Lake and the sacred landscape of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.

For Rajan, the experience was not about reaching a single destination as quickly as possible. The journey itself was the destination.

Every valley, river crossing, mountain pass and remote settlement became part of an extraordinary Himalayan experience.

Over the Gurla Pass and Back Through Limi

The expedition did not finish at Kailash.

From the sacred region, Rajan and his companions continued across the Gurla Pass toward Taklakot before turning back toward Nepal.

The return route through the Limi Valley added another extraordinary dimension to the journey.

Limi is one of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan valleys, and travelling through it provides an extraordinary glimpse into a landscape where traditional Himalayan life has continued for generations.

Eventually, after approximately 33 days of travel, the expedition returned to Simikot.

The journey had formed a remarkable circuit through the western Himalaya and Tibetan plateau.

For Rajan, it became a defining lifetime experience.

According to Rajan’s account, very few people had completed this entire route on foot at the time of his expedition. He considers himself among approximately the sixth or seventh people to have walked the full trail in this manner.

The significance of this experience is not simply the number.

Today, travellers can find photographs, maps, itineraries and extensive information about Kailash Manasarovar.
