What is the traditional route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Kailash Parikrama, or the Kora walk, is always optional if you don’t want to make a complete circumambulation (Parikrama or Kora) of Mount Kailash. It is not mandatory. Many Kailash Yatri want to travel only up to Mansarovar or at the Darchen base of Kailash or to Diraphuk, the north face, on the 1st day of the Kailash Parikrama walk.
After the 1st day Kailash north face walk, our friendly team will assist with the safest practical arrangement based on your location and condition. If you want to come back from Diraphuk and stay in Darchen for an extra night, additional transportation and accommodation costs may apply.
Completing the Kora should never take priority over your health. You can also hire a private horse to ride or a porter to assist with the Kailash parikrama walk at an extra cost.

Is a Lake Manasarovar bath compulsory or allowed?
No.
The water is extremely cold, and the lake sits at a very high altitude, so we don’t recommend taking a bath at Lake Manasarovar. Moreover, these days Chinese authorities don’t give permission to take a bath in Lake Manasarovar. So we will just touch the water and do meditation at Lake Manasarovar.
A ritual bath is a personal religious decision and should never be treated as a requirement for completing the pilgrimage.

Is Lake Manasarovar Parikrama included?

Yes. Lake Manasarovar is a central part of the standard itinerary.  We will do the circumambulation, Parikrama or Kora of Lake Manasarovar by bus on our Kailash Mansarovar tour.

The planned Kailash journey includes time around the lake and a puja and meditation program, subject to local conditions.

Can I complete the Kailash Kora if I become sick?

First, our goal is that we will not let you get sick. We will do a genune care so that you shouldn’t get sick ( given that you have a healthy start to the Kailash tour)
But if you feel sick during Kailash Yatra, you do not continue Kailash Parikrama simply because you have already started.

If you develop significant altitude symptoms or become physically unwell, tell your guide immediately.

Depending on your location and local transport availability, you may need to return to Darchen or seek medical assistance.

What is the best month for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
The main operating period for the Kailash Manasarovar tour is generally May to September.

June, July, and August are popular, while May and September can be a bit colder.

The final choice should depend on current weather, route conditions, permits, and available departures.

Which route from Nepal is best for Kailash Yatra?
For travelers seeking a direct overland journey, the Totopani Kodari / Zhangmu route through friendship high way is the best since the Kerung route is suspended.

Travelers who want additional Tibetan cultural sightseeing may prefer to travel to Kailash via a route via Lhasa or Beijing.

Simikot / Hilsa route to Kailash can be another option.

Many NRI yatri for Kailash yatra prefer Beijing Lhasa route.
The best option depends on your time, budget, nationality, permits, and current border conditions.

Can I travel alone to Kailash Mansarovar?

The yatra pilgrimage is always individual if you take it from a spiritual point of view. However, all our Kailash Yatra are group departure tour joing other pilgrims. You can book individually, but it will be a group trip from Kathmandu or Lhasa to make it more reliable, safe, and enjoyable.  You can choose to use single rooms at an extra cost if you wish, though.
The journey requires organized travel, permits, and local support, which we at Earthbound Expeditions provide.
You should not, or you can not, plan the Tibet/Kailash portion as an independent backpacking trip.

Solo travelers can normally join an organized group departure trip to Kailash if they meet the applicable requirements.

Can I touch Mount Kailash?
The standard pilgrimage does not involve touching or climbing Mount Kailash. The Diraphuk, after 1st day of the Kailash Parikrama walk north face of Kailash and is the closest we can get.  There is a walk called the Kailash Charan Sparsa walk.

Access to the Kailash Charan Sparsa walk – touching of Kailash is subject to local rules and restrictions by the Chinese police and Military.
Kailash Charan Sparsh, the walk from Dirapuk toward the North Face to physically reach/touch the base of Mount Kailash, is currently not permitted. The local Chinese authorities have closed the Charan Sparsh walk route, while the normal Outer Kora remains permitted.
So walking up to Dirapuk or a bit further toward the North Face is possible; pilgrims can approach for a limited distance, but must stop at the designated boundary.

Although we at Earthbound Expeditions have personally walked, or taken some people in the last couple of years, to this Charan Sparsa walk in the year 2026, the horse year in the Tibetan calendar, they closed the Charan Sparsa walk.

We can add one day at Diraphuk North Face and try to walk towards the base of Kailash to touch it, subject to local rules and restrictions by the Chinese police and Military. If they don’t give permission we can’t go.

Can I climb Mount Kailash?
Climbing Kailash Parvat, or the Kailash peak, is strictly forbidden for religious, cultural, and legal reasons.
However, circumambulate the Kora of the mountain as part of the Kailash Parikrama pilgrimage, a spiritual journey around the peak.

Kailash is considered a sacred mountain in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon religion. For followers of these religions, climbing the Kailash mountain would be an act of disrespect. Also, they claimed many people tried to climb the Kailash peak many times in the past, and no one ever succeeded. The only person claimed to be on top of Kailash was Milarepa, a Tibetan saint from the 11th century or Lord Shiva himself, probably with his consort Ma Parvathi and son Ganesh.

The Kailash pilgrimage does not involve climbing the mountain.

The journey focuses on circumambulation of Mount Kailash.

Do I need travel insurance to go on a Kailash tour?
Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Your insurance policy for the Kailash tour or the Himalayas should cover high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation and should specifically include the maximum altitude of your itinerary. Once you book the Kailash Mansarovar tour with Earthbound Expeditions, we will send a list of recommended insurance companies. We will also send the list of gear you should carry for Kailash Yatra.

Is there electricity during the Kailash Kora or Kailash tour?
Charging facilities at Kailash Parikrama can be limited, although it is aviliable.  In other places, while on the Kailash tour with Earthbound Expeditions, we use good hotels and they have charging ports ( please carry a travel adaptor)

Carry a reliable power bank and charge your devices whenever electricity is available.

Is there internet in the Mount Kailash area?
Internet and mobile connectivity are limited in remote sections of Tibet, including the Kailash region. Although many of our Kailash yatri mentioned that if you have data or an extended plan, you can use it. Wifi is available in the majority of hotels; our  Kailash yatri were calling home, even showing Mansarovar or Kailash north face on live calls to home.
Please check with your internet/phone provider before you travel to Kailash.

But do not always expect continuous strong internet around Lake Manasarovar or during the Kora, though.

Carry only essential items such as water, warm clothing, personal medication, sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks, a headlamp, rain protection, and basic personal items.

Your main luggage can normally remain at Darchen according to the operating plan.

Yes, porter services may be available during the Kora.

The source package gives an indicative porter rate of approximately RMB 1,300–1,500, but prices can change.

Horse services may be available depending on local conditions.

They are normally arranged locally and charged separately.

Availability is not guaranteed, so confirm before departure.

Some older travelers successfully complete the journey.

However, age alone does not determine suitability.

Older travelers should seek medical advice and honestly assess their ability to handle high altitude and long walking days.

Previous trekking experience is helpful but not the only factor.

The most important considerations are your physical condition, ability to walk for several hours, ability to function at high altitude, and response to altitude.

Beginners should prepare well before departure.

The journey can be operated with structured support, but it involves genuine high-altitude risks.

Altitude sickness, weather, road conditions, and physical exhaustion can all affect travelers.

The walking portion is approximately 42 km over three days.

The overall circuit is sometimes described as approximately 52 km when vehicle sections are included.

Dolma La Pass is approximately 5,630 meters (18,471 feet) above sea level.

It is the highest point of the standard Kailash Kora.
