Yatra Overview

Kailash Manasarovar yatra  : Overland tour from Kathmandu
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu is a 15 days overland tour. The sacred Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage journey continues beyond Nepal borders and attracts spiritual seekers from all over the world.  The Yatra to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar takes Yatris to the western corners of Tibet, China where they get to experience the ethereal atmosphere of this sacred location – the abode of lord Shiva also known as “Kailash Parvart”

For ages, Mount Kailash also known as “Sumeru Parvat” standing at 6638 meters ( 21778 feet) above sea level, has captivated the hearts and minds of devotees of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jains, Bonpo, and other spiritual traditions. While Buddhists revere Kailash as the home of Avalokiteshvara (the Buddha of Compassion), Hindus see it as the residence place of Lord Shiva hence Shiva is known as “Kailash Pati”. The stunning pyramidal structure of this holy mountain and its divine connection have made this sacred location a medium for spiritual enlightenment.

Situated at the foot of Mount Kailash, Holy Lake Manasarovar adds even more spiritual significance to the Kailash yatra.  Holy Lake Manasarovar is one of the world’s highest freshwater lakes and, the source of the four great rivers; the Ganges (also known as the Karnali, the longest river in Nepal) flows on the south side, whereas, the holy rivers Indus, the Sutlej, and the Brahmaputra (the Yarlung Tsangpo) in the east, west, and north, respectively. To purge their sins and prepare for spiritual emancipation, pilgrims frequently immerse themselves in the lake as part of a ceremony. Also, bathing in the Mansarovar lake will free oneself from the cycle of life and death.

The challenging and transformational nature of the pilgrimage sets this overland Kailash Manasarovar Yatra apart. The  Kailash Mansarovar yatra starts from Kathmandu, Nepal with a scenic drive viewing farmlands, and small settlements that will take us to Syabrubesi north of Kathmandu. From there we will drive further to the Nepal-Tibet Border, Kerung admiring the stunning landscape around us. We will traverse through rough roads and mountain passes of Tibet, dealing with difficult circumstances and high elevations. We also may experience altitude sickness and unpredictable weather during the Kailash yatra, so we should be physically and mentally prepared before even starting the Kailash Mansarovar yatra.

Holy Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is one of the divine journeys taken to achieve Moksha (salvation) and clean the sins. According to the mythology, in order to carry out the once-in-a-lifetime journey, you must be summoned by the divine. You need an experienced team who take you to Kailash Manasarovar with love and care. After breakfast, our guide will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the Swayambhunath Stupa, also called the Monkey Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the religious pilgrimages for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is situated on the west side of Kathmandu on top of the hill with 365 steps that take you to the giant dome-shaped stupa. You will have a beautiful bird eye view of Kathmandu from this sacred place and it is one of the viewpoints in Kathmandu. After, strolling around the stupa and clicking some memories we then travel to Budhanilkantha.

Budhanilkantha is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Vishnu and is one of the most sacred and important temples for Hindus. You will get to see the reclining long statue of Lord Vishnu in the pond. The most interesting thing (not known by many people) about this temple is the oldest belief which says the King (now former) of Nepal should not visit this temple, as the King is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple is believed to be from the 5th century. We then drive to one of the Hindu holy sites, Pashupatinath Temple.

Drive to Tarboche & Trek to Diraphuk - 1st Day of Kora

Early in the morning, we will drive around 58 km and reach the Tarboche. We then meet our porters and prepare ourselves for the Parikrama or Khora of holy Kailash Parvat – called  Gang or Kang Rinpoche in Tibetan language.  Kailash Yatra Parikarma starts from Yama Dwar at Tharboche.

From Yama Dwar, we will walk for around 6 to 7 hours to reach Diraphuk the north face of Holy Mt.Kailash.
During this Kailash Parikrama yatra, we get a close view of Mount Kailash.  Once we reach Diraphuk we can view the beautiful north face of Mount Kailash.

About Kailash Parikrama :
Almost Everyone comes to make Kailash Khora meaning circumulation of Hoy Mt. Kailash going through the highest pass Dolma La (5,645m). Although local Tibetan people make Kailash Khora in a single day, it takes three days for us and the total walk is about 52-kilometer but since we can drive a bit both ways of starting and ending of Parikrama now it is a total of 38 KM we have to walk in 3 days. This Parikrama is called the outer Khora of Kailash.
But people who are not able to make the whole Parikrama for some reason have the option to go up to the North face of Kailash, do some puja, and back to Darchen and wait for group members to finish. We have specially added one more day in North Face to touch the Kailash which is called “Kailash Charan sparsa “a special moment in life. Not every company does it.

Tharboche and Diraphuk a well-known holy places for organizing events during festivals. They organize a grand event during the Saga Dawa Festival. If we are lucky and reach during the festival time, then we get to explore more about the culture and traditions of the local communities.

DIRAPHUK – KAILASH CHARAN SPARSA WALK AND BACK TO DIRAPHUK - special day

Kailash Charan Spash walk – touching feet of Kailash Parvat:
Today we do a sacred walk from Derapuk monastery to the feet of Kailash Parvat on the north face side of the mountain, a total of about 7 km distance. We all will try to reach to the base of Mt. Kailash Parvat – the Charan – or touch the feet of Mt. Kailash. It is a heavenly beautiful walk through a bank of milky water and snowfall from the top of Kailash mountain, it may feel a bit heavy due to the altitude. We will walk slowly and drink lots of water. We can do some meditation and Puja there as well. The Charan sparse trek in Kailash is also considered as part of Inner Parikarama.
We will be seeking blessing from Lord Shiva at this beautiful pilgrimage, expectation of positive energy. Kailash parvat is axis of the Mundi and Ganges flowing from Shiva’s matted hair ( Jatta ). By touching the miracle feet of Mount Kailash and the Ganges axis people get moksha – salvation, a rebirth. It is believed that the Ganges is the water that flows from the melted snow of Kailash and interestingly enough 4 of the major river in Asia Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali originated within a 50 KM radius of Kailash mountain. That is why May be Kailash is known as Sumeru Parvat or the center of the earth.

After breakfast and the second day of Kailash Kora starts. We will walk around 6-7 hrs. to reach the Zuthulphuk. The Kailash Parikrama yatra of today is the most difficult and we will be walking around 22km.

During the yatra, we will ascend towards the Drolma La pass, the highest point (5680m) of the whole Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Before reaching the Drolma La Pass, there is a site where Milarepa and Shiva Tsal’s footprints can be seen. Once we reach the Pass, we will pray, the pass is decorated with prayer flags. From Dolma La Pass we will be descending, On the way, we will see Gauri Kund or Parvati Taal , and we will ask our Sherpa to get some holy Jal from here. FAQS

Does helicopter tour take you to Kailash? Is Helicopter tour to Kailash worth?

Does helicopter tour take you to Kailash? Is the Helicopter tour to Kailash worth?
The advertised helicopter tour to Kailash is quite misleading as there is no permission to fly a Helicopter in Tibet / China at Kailash region due to security. So the Kailash helicopter tour takes you to the Nepal / Tibet border town of Hilsa and from there, people take a Jeep or bus to Mansarovar and complete the Kailash Mansarovar tour and back to Hilsa and there take a helicopter and back to Simikot Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu. So no helicopter goes to Kailash and we don’t recommend helicopter tours due to 3 reasons. Reason no. 1 is it is going too high too quickly so you may get sick. Reason no. 2 is due to bad weather lot of times the helicopter flights are canceled or delayed and you may end up spending more time and money, at the same time disappointed. Reason no. 3 is you will be spending more money. The best we always suggest is 15 15-day Kailash Overland tour from Kathmandu.

How long is the Kailash Parikrama walk? And how hard is the walk?

How long is the Kailash Parikrama walk? And how hard is the walk?
The Kailash Parikrama or Kailash Kora walk total from Darchen to Darchen is 54 KM, but since now you can drive up to Tharboche, Yama Dwar to start the Parikrama and you can end the walk at Sarsiyu Valley end of Zothulphuk now total walk becomes only 38 Kms in 3 days. The first day from Tharboche ( Yama Dwar) to Diraphuk the north face of Kailash walk is about 10 Km total which is not so hard and it is about 6 to 8 hours of walk.
The 2nd day of Parikrama to Shivastal and to Dolma la is the hardest and longest one all the way to Zutholphuk it is a total of about 18 KM and it takes about 10 to 12 hours max. We start quite early and it is a full day’s walk slowly.
The 3rd day is again about 8 to 10 Km walk and it is about 5 to 6 hours of walk. You can take a horse at extra cost if you can’t walk all (a horse is useful for uphill only). You can also hire an extra porter at Kailash at extra cost. The walking stick can be useful.
Although it takes 3 days for us to Kailash Parikrama the local Tibetan pilgrims does in one day.

Is there a temple in Kailash Manasarovar ?

Is there a temple in Kailash Manasarovar?
There is no Temple at Kailash Mansarovar. The main crown Jwel is Kailash parvat which is known as Sumeru Parvat which everyone worships or prays too. At Manasarovar, people take holy baths and do Puja or havan at the Bank of the Lake. At the North face Diraphuk, and at Dolma la pilgrimage do some Puja, worship or burn lamp or incense.  At Shivastal and also at Tharboche ( Yama Dwar) people leave old clothes or nails or hair believing that they get rebirth or new life. It is a very holy land itself and most of the people say that they saw Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Shesnaag, Parvati, or Apsara there. It all depends on your belief and imagination. There are holy caves around Kailash Mansarovar where many gurus, masters, and saints have meditated in the past. You can practice some Meditation there as well.
