Yatra Overview

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 is a high-altitude pilgrimage journey through Nepal and western Tibet, combining spiritual traditions, dramatic Himalayan landscapes, and the sacred circumambulation of Mount Kailash.

Our standard 14-day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Kathmandu follows the overland route through Kerung, Saga, Lake Manasarovar, and Darchen before the three-day Kailash Kora. The most demanding section is the crossing of Dolma La Pass at approximately 5,630 meters (18,471 feet).

The journey is much more than a long-distance road trip. You travel through remote sections of the Tibetan Plateau, spend time beside sacred Lake Manasarovar, visit important monasteries and pilgrimage sites, and complete the outer Kora around Mount Kailash.

At the same time, this is a serious high-altitude journey. Long driving days, basic accommodation during the Kora, cold weather, limited connectivity, and the altitude above 4,500 meters require proper preparation.

Our 2027 departures are planned mainly between April and October, with the principal operating season generally falling between May and September. Departure dates, border access, permits, accommodation, and the ability to complete the Kora can change because of weather, government regulations, road conditions, and local operating restrictions.

Important: 2027 departure dates and prices on this page are planned/operator-listed information. Confirm the final departure, price, permit requirements, border route, and travel regulations with our team before making final travel arrangements.

Why Choose the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2027?

Mount Kailash holds deep spiritual importance across several traditions. Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Bon tradition regard the mountain and surrounding landscape as sacred.

For Hindu pilgrims, Mount Kailash is traditionally associated with Lord Shiva. Lake Manasarovar also holds an important place in Hindu religious tradition. Buddhist pilgrims connect the region with important sacred traditions, while Jain and Bon traditions have their own associations with the mountain.

The pilgrimage therefore brings together people from different backgrounds who share a deep respect for the region.

The journey also offers a rare opportunity to experience western Tibet. The landscape changes dramatically as you leave the green valleys of Nepal and cross into the high Tibetan Plateau. Roads pass through broad valleys, high mountain passes, lakes, nomadic landscapes, and remote settlements.

The spiritual significance remains the main reason for the journey, but the physical setting makes the experience equally memorable.

What Makes Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Different?

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not a conventional sightseeing holiday.

A large part of the journey involves driving through remote areas, while the Kora demands several hours of walking at extreme altitude. You may spend a long day on the road and then wake early for another high-altitude journey.

The accommodation also changes during the trip. Kathmandu and other major stops offer standard hotels, while accommodation near the Kora is considerably more basic.

This combination makes the journey challenging but also gives it a very different character from an ordinary Himalayan tour.

You should travel with patience and realistic expectations.

The objective is not to rush from one attraction to another. It is to make the journey safely, respect the religious character of the region, and experience the landscape and pilgrimage at a steady pace.

Who Is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra For?

This journey is suitable for travelers who understand that Kailash is a high-altitude pilgrimage, not a conventional comfortable holiday.

It can be appropriate for:

  • Religious pilgrims.
  • Spiritual travelers.
  • Travelers with previous trekking experience.
  • People comfortable with long road journeys.
  • Travelers who can walk for several hours at high altitude.
  • Individuals prepared to stay in simple accommodation during the Kora.
  • Private groups looking for a customized pilgrimage.
  • Travelers who are physically prepared for high-altitude conditions.

It may not be appropriate for someone expecting easy walking, luxury accommodation throughout, continuous internet access, or a relaxed sightseeing itinerary.

Age alone should not be treated as a guarantee of suitability. Older travelers should discuss the altitude and physical demands with a qualified medical professional before booking.

The original source states that travelers of different ages have completed the journey, but also acknowledges the significant effects of altitude.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Route from Kathmandu

The standard overland route begins in Kathmandu and crosses into Tibet through the Kerung/Rasuwagadhi border area.

Route at a glance

Kathmandu → Syabru Besi/Timure → Kerung → Saga → Lake Manasarovar → Darchen → Dirapuk → Dolma La → Zuthulpuk → Darchen → Saga → Kerung → Kathmandu

This route combines road travel and trekking.

The first part gradually takes you from Kathmandu into the Himalayan border region. After entering Tibet, the altitude rises considerably as the journey continues toward Saga and Lake Manasarovar.

The most demanding section comes during the three-day Kora.

The operator’s current route description identifies the Syabru Besi–Kerung border route as the standard planned route but notes that border and route arrangements can change according to current authority decisions.

Kailash Kora: What You Need to Know

The Kailash Kora, also called Kailash Parikrama, is the central trekking section of the pilgrimage.

The planned outer Kora is approximately 42 km on foot, divided across three days.

The route described by the operator includes:

  • Darchen/Tarboche to Dirapuk – approximately 12 km
  • Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk via Dolma La – approximately 22 km
  • Zuthulpuk to the Kora endpoint – approximately 8 km

Some sections of the overall circuit are covered by vehicle. The source content therefore describes the overall route as approximately 52 km, including roughly 10 km by vehicle, while the walking distance is about 42 km.

How difficult is the Kora?

The Kora is difficult mainly because of altitude rather than technical climbing.

You should be prepared for:

  • High altitude above 4,500 meters.
  • A maximum elevation of approximately 5,630 meters.
  • Long walking days.
  • Cold and windy conditions.
  • Uneven rocky trails.
  • Limited accommodation.
  • Reduced oxygen levels.
  • Rapidly changing weather.
  • A demanding second day.

The Kora should not be approached as a race.

Your goal is to complete it safely while respecting your body’s response to altitude.

Horse and Porter Services During the Kora

Horse and porter services may be available during the Kora, subject to local availability and regulations.

The source package currently gives indicative prices of approximately:

  • Porter: RMB 1,300–1,500
  • Horse: approximately RMB 4,200–5,000

Prices can change according to local conditions.

If you decide to hire a horse or porter, confirm the service and payment conditions with the guide before proceeding.

These services should not be treated as a substitute for proper preparation.

Can You Stop the Kora if You Become Unwell?

Yes. Your safety comes first.

A traveler may need to stop the Kora because of altitude symptoms, exhaustion, injury, weather, or another unexpected problem.

The original package describes vehicle/ambulance arrangements for travelers who need to return from the Kora before completion, with additional costs potentially applying.

Exact arrangements depend on where you are on the route and what local transport is available.

If you feel seriously unwell, tell the guide immediately.

Do not hide symptoms simply because you want to complete the pilgrimage.

Charan Sparsh: Important Clarification

Charan Sparsh has sometimes been discussed as an additional pilgrimage option near the northern face of Mount Kailash.

However, access depends entirely on permission from the relevant authorities.

The original itinerary specifically states that permission was not available for the groups described in the source and therefore does not promise Charan Sparsh as part of the standard itinerary.

We follow the same principle:

Charan Sparsh is not guaranteed and should never be marketed as an included service unless official permission is confirmed for the specific departure.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Cost 2027

The source package lists a starting price of approximately USD 2,750 per person for larger group departures and up to approximately USD 3,300 per person for certain private group arrangements.

Because Kailash travel costs depend on group size, permits, transportation, accommodation, route conditions, and government requirements, the final 2027 price should be confirmed at the time of booking.

Indicative pricing

Travel Arrangement Indicative Cost
Large group joining From approximately USD 2,750/person
Private group From approximately USD 3,300/person
Horse during Kora Approximately RMB 4,200–5,000
Porter during Kora Approximately RMB 1,300–1,500
Darchen hotel upgrade Approximately USD 60/person, subject to availability

These figures are based on the supplied package information and should be reconfirmed before publication or booking.

Additional Costs to Plan For

A well-planned budget should include more than the advertised package price.

1. Horse Service

If available and required, a horse may help reduce the walking burden during the Kora.

Confirm the current local rate before booking.

2. Porter

A porter can carry a limited amount of personal luggage during the Kora.

The source package states a maximum day-pack weight of approximately 5 kg.

3. Extra Night in Darchen

If you return from the Kora before reaching the planned overnight point, you may need an additional night in Darchen.

4. Hotel Upgrade

Travelers who prefer a higher category of accommodation in Darchen may request an upgrade if rooms are available.

5. Astapath Visit

An additional visit to Astapath should never be advertised as guaranteed. It depends on permission and local access.

The source information gives an indicative additional vehicle cost, but this should be reconfirmed before departure.

Kailash Mansarovar Visa and Permit Requirements

This is one of the most important sections to verify before booking.

Travel requirements for Tibet depend on:

  • Your nationality.
  • Your passport.
  • Where you enter China.
  • Current Chinese immigration rules.
  • Tibet travel regulations.
  • The specific route.
  • Current border procedures.
  • Required permits for restricted areas.

Do not assume that the visa process for one nationality applies to everyone.

The Chinese Embassy in Nepal currently provides ordinary visa application instructions through the Kathmandu Chinese Visa Application Service Center. Applicants first complete an online application and upload supporting documents before proceeding with the in-person submission process when instructed.

Chinese tourist visa

The L visa is the Chinese visa category generally associated with tourism. However, whether you need an L visa depends on your nationality and current visa-exemption rules.

Some nationalities may have visa-free arrangements that can change over time.

Tibet Travel Permit

Travel to Tibet is subject to additional regional travel requirements.

The required permits should be arranged through the appropriate travel operator according to the current regulations.

Other permits

Travel to western Tibet and the Mount Kailash region may involve additional permits or authorizations.

Your travel operator should confirm which documents apply to your specific nationality and itinerary.

Important visa warning

Do not rely on old information stating that every traveler must obtain a specific type of group visa or, conversely, that every traveler can enter Tibet using an individual tourist visa.

Rules change.

The current official Chinese visa information should always take priority over older online travel articles. The Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the official Visa Application Center provide the current application procedures and processing information.

How Long Does Chinese Visa Processing Take?

The Chinese Embassy in Nepal currently lists regular processing at approximately four working days and express services at shorter processing periods, but the process also includes online preliminary review and document submission requirements.

For a 2027 Kailash journey, do not plan your visa application around the shortest advertised processing period.

Start early.

Your operator should confirm:

  1. Whether you need a Chinese visa.
  2. Where you should apply.
  3. What documents are required.
  4. Whether your nationality qualifies for a visa exemption.
  5. Which Tibet permits are required.
  6. When the permit application can begin.
  7. Whether your passport must remain available for a specific period.

Best Time for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027

The main Kailash Mansarovar travel season generally runs from May to September.

These months offer the most practical operating window, although conditions remain unpredictable because the route reaches very high elevations.

May

May can bring cold conditions, particularly at higher elevations.

Snow may still affect some sections.

Travelers should pack for winter conditions rather than expecting mild spring weather.

June

June generally provides better conditions for many travelers, although high-altitude weather can still change rapidly.

Cold mornings and nights remain common.

July

July is within the main operating season.

Conditions can be relatively favorable, but rain and changing weather may affect roads and trails.

August

August remains a popular month.

Weather can vary considerably between lower valleys, Lake Manasarovar, and the Kora.

September

September can provide clear mountain landscapes, but temperatures begin to drop, especially at night.

The later you travel in the season, the more important it becomes to confirm road and weather conditions.

The source content identifies May–September as the primary season and notes that weather can change rapidly at high altitude.

Kailash Mansarovar Weather and Temperature

The Kailash region does not have a single uniform climate.

Temperature depends heavily on altitude and time of day.

You may experience:

  • Strong sunshine during the day.
  • Very cold mornings.
  • Cold nights.
  • Strong winds.
  • Rain.
  • Snow at high elevations.
  • Rapid weather changes.

Do not pack only according to the average temperature of Kathmandu.

The conditions around Lake Manasarovar and Dolma La can be dramatically colder.

A layered clothing system works best.

Altitude Sickness at Kailash Mansarovar

Altitude is the biggest physical challenge of this journey.

The itinerary takes you from Kathmandu at roughly 1,320 meters to locations above 4,500 meters and eventually to Dolma La at approximately 5,630 meters.

At these elevations, the body receives less oxygen.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness, or previous trekking experience.

Being fit does not guarantee that you will avoid altitude sickness.

Common symptoms

Symptoms can include:

  • Headache.
  • Nausea.
  • Dizziness.
  • Unusual fatigue.
  • Poor sleep.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Shortness of breath.

More serious symptoms require immediate attention.

If you feel unwell, tell your guide.

Do not hide symptoms because you want to complete the Kora.

How to reduce the risk

  • Ascend gradually where possible.
  • Walk slowly.
  • Drink regularly.
  • Eat sufficient food.
  • Avoid overexertion.
  • Rest when necessary.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Do not take medication without appropriate medical advice.
  • Inform the team immediately if symptoms worsen.

The itinerary includes a rest/acclimatization day in Kerung before the major increase in elevation, which is an important part of the planned journey.

Is Good Fitness Enough to Prevent Altitude Sickness?

No.

Physical fitness can help you handle walking and long travel days, but it does not eliminate the risk of AMS.

A physically fit person can still become seriously affected by altitude.

For this reason, preparation should include both physical conditioning and realistic altitude awareness.

Physical Preparation for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Begin preparing several weeks before your trip.

You do not need to become an elite athlete.

Instead, develop the ability to walk steadily for several hours and recover from physical effort.

Walking

Regular walking is one of the most useful forms of preparation.

Gradually increase your distance and include hills or stairs when possible.

If you are not currently active, start slowly and build up.

Hiking

Weekend hikes can help your legs adjust to uneven terrain.

Practice walking with the shoes and socks you plan to use during the Yatra.

Stairs

Stair climbing can improve leg strength and cardiovascular fitness.

Increase the duration gradually rather than suddenly doing a very hard workout.

Yoga and breathing exercises

Yoga can support flexibility, balance, mobility, and relaxation.

Breathing exercises can also help you become more comfortable with controlled breathing, but they should not be promoted as a way to prevent altitude sickness.

Medical consultation

If you have a medical condition, take regular medication, or have concerns about high-altitude travel, discuss the journey with a qualified medical professional before departure.

The source material also recommends medical consultation and physical preparation before the Yatra.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Packing List

Packing correctly makes a significant difference.

Clothing

Pack layers rather than relying on one heavy jacket.

Recommended items include:

  • Thermal base layers.
  • Fleece or warm mid-layer.
  • Down or insulated jacket.
  • Waterproof/windproof outer jacket.
  • Warm trekking trousers.
  • Thermal trousers.
  • Wool or thermal socks.
  • Warm gloves.
  • Sun hat.
  • Woolen hat.
  • Neck warmer or buff.

Footwear

  • Comfortable trekking boots.
  • Warm socks.
  • Lightweight camp shoes.
  • Spare laces.

Break in your trekking boots before the trip.

Do not bring brand-new boots and expect them to become comfortable during the Kora.

Sun protection

High-altitude sunlight can be intense.

Pack:

  • UV-protection sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Lip balm with sun protection.
  • Sun hat.
  • Face protection.

Personal items

  • Water bottle.
  • Headlamp.
  • Power bank.

  • Passport.
  • Passport copies.
  • Visa documents, if applicable.
  • Permit documentation.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Emergency contacts.
  • Flight information.
  • Booking confirmation.

Carry digital backups as well as physical copies where practical.

What Should You Carry During the Kora?

Do not carry your full luggage.

Keep your main duffel bag at the designated Darchen accommodation if the operating plan allows.

Your day pack should contain only essentials, such as:

  • Water.
  • Warm layer.
  • Rain protection.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Personal medication.
  • Headlamp.
  • Small snacks.
  • Gloves.
  • Phone/power bank.
  • Basic personal items.

The source itinerary recommends taking only essential items during the Kora and leaving the main duffel in Darchen.

Internet, Mobile Network and Charging

Do not expect reliable internet throughout the Kailash journey.

Connectivity becomes increasingly limited in remote areas of Tibet, particularly around Lake Manasarovar and during the Kora.

Some hotels may offer Wi-Fi, but speed and availability can vary.

During the Kora, charging opportunities may be limited.

Our recommendations

  • Carry a good power bank.
  • Charge all devices whenever electricity is available.
  • Reduce unnecessary phone use.
  • Download important information before leaving Kathmandu.
  • Do not depend on mobile data for navigation.
  • Keep emergency contacts available offline.

The source itinerary specifically warns travelers that internet and charging facilities can be limited in remote Tibet and during the Kora.

Travel Insurance for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for this journey.

However, not every standard travel policy covers extreme high-altitude travel.

Before purchasing a policy, check whether it covers:

  • Medical treatment.
  • High-altitude trekking.
  • Emergency evacuation.
  • Emergency transportation.
  • Helicopter rescue where available.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Baggage loss.
  • The geographic region included in your itinerary.
  • The maximum altitude covered.

The policy should explicitly cover the altitude of your journey, which can reach approximately 5,630 meters.

Do not assume that the phrase “trekking insurance” automatically covers the Kailash Kora.

Ask the insurer directly.

Important Travel and Customs Guidelines

Tibet is subject to local regulations and security procedures.

Travelers should respect all instructions from immigration, customs, police, military personnel, guides, and local authorities.

Photography

Do not photograph:

  • Immigration checkpoints where prohibited.
  • Customs facilities where prohibited.
  • Police facilities.
  • Military installations.
  • Security personnel where photography is restricted.

Always follow the guide’s instructions.

Documents

Keep your passport secure.

Do not leave important documents in unattended luggage.

Restricted materials

Do not assume that materials permitted in your home country can automatically be carried into Tibet.

Follow current customs regulations and the instructions provided before departure.

The source content specifically warns travelers about photography around customs, police, and military areas.

  • Protect yourself from the sun.
  • Follow the guide’s instructions.
  • Stay with the group.
  • Inform the team if you feel unwell.
  • Keep your passport and documents secure.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa

The overland route from Kathmandu is not the only possible way to reach the Kailash region.

A Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa can provide a different experience by combining the pilgrimage with major Tibetan cultural sites.

A Lhasa-based itinerary may include:

  • Lhasa.
  • Potala Palace.
  • Jokhang Temple.
  • Sera Monastery.
  • Norbulingka.
  • Barkhor area.
  • Gyantse.
  • Shigatse.
  • Tashilhunpo Monastery.
  • Yamdrok Lake.
  • Western Tibet.
  • Lake Manasarovar.
  • Mount Kailash.

One advantage of a Lhasa itinerary is the opportunity to spend additional time acclimatizing before reaching the extreme elevations of the Kailash region.

However, it also requires a longer itinerary and different travel arrangements.

If your priority is the shortest practical route from Nepal, the overland Kerung route may be more appropriate.

If you want to combine Tibetan cultural sightseeing with Kailash, a Lhasa route may be worth considering.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Overland Route

The overland journey from Kathmandu is one of the most popular ways to approach Kailash from Nepal.

The route is:

Kathmandu → Kerung → Saga → Lake Manasarovar → Darchen → Kailash Kora

The main advantage is that the journey starts directly in Nepal and does not require a separate flight to Lhasa.

The overland route also allows travelers to experience the gradual change from the Himalayan foothills of Nepal to the high Tibetan Plateau.

However, the journey includes long road days.

If you prefer cultural sightseeing in Lhasa, consider the Lhasa option.

If your priority is a direct pilgrimage route from Nepal, the overland option is the more natural choice.

Can You Visit Kailash Mansarovar from Nepal?

Yes. The standard overland itinerary described on this page begins in Kathmandu and travels through the Kerung border toward western Tibet.

Other route options may also be available depending on regulations and operating conditions.

The three broad options discussed in the source material are:

Overland

Kathmandu → Kerung → Saga → Manasarovar → Darchen → Kora.

Via Lhasa

Kathmandu → Lhasa → central Tibet → western Tibet → Kailash.

Helicopter-assisted routes

Certain helicopter-based itineraries can reduce road and trekking time, but route availability, permits, weather, and local operating rules must be confirmed for the specific season.

The source content identifies all three approaches as possible ways of reaching the Kailash region from Nepal.

The source material states that the operator has been organizing Kailash Mansarovar journeys since 2007.

For travelers specifically interested in a full-moon Kailash Yatra, confirm the lunar date, planned Lake Manasarovar visit, and actual departure schedule with our team before booking.

Day1

Arrive in Kathmandu

Welcome to Kathmandu, the starting point of your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel.

After check-in, take time to rest after your flight. Depending on your arrival time, our team will provide a trip briefing and explain the next stages of the journey.

Use this day to organize your personal belongings and prepare for the road journey ahead.

Overnight: Kathmandu
Meals: Not included unless specified
Altitude: Approximately 1,320 m

Day2

Kathmandu Sightseeing and Yatra Preparation

After breakfast, visit important religious and cultural sites in Kathmandu Valley.

The planned sightseeing program includes:

  • Pashupatinath Temple
  • Gujeshwari Temple area
  • Boudhanath Stupa
  • Budhanilkantha, home to the famous Sleeping Vishnu image

These sites provide an important cultural introduction before you travel toward Tibet.

The day also gives you time to complete final preparations. Check your documents, organize your day pack, and make sure essential medicines and personal items are easily accessible.

A relaxed day in Kathmandu is also useful before the long road journey begins.

Overnight: Kathmandu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Altitude: Approximately 1,320 m

Day3

Kathmandu to Syabru Besi or Timure

The journey toward the Nepal–China border begins early.

You travel north through Nepal’s mountain landscape toward Syabru Besi and the border area around Timure.

The road passes through rural settlements and Himalayan terrain, with views of surrounding mountain ranges.

Depending on the final border and road arrangements, the overnight location may vary between Syabru Besi and Timure.

The source itinerary gives approximately 152 km and around 7–8 hours of driving for this section.

Overnight: Syabru Besi or Timure
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Driving: Approximately 7–8 hours

Day4

Cross the Nepal–Tibet Border and Drive to Kerung

After completing the required Nepal-side formalities, continue toward the Rasuwagadhi border.

Border procedures can take time, so keep your passport and travel documents accessible.

After crossing into Tibet, meet the local support team and continue toward Kerung, also known as Kyirong.

The road distance on the Tibetan side is relatively short, but border procedures and traffic conditions can affect the total travel time.

Kerung sits at a much higher elevation than Kathmandu, so use the evening to rest.

Overnight: Kerung
Altitude: Approximately 2,800 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day5

Kerung Acclimatization Day

Today is an important acclimatization day.

Rather than immediately continuing toward the much higher Tibetan Plateau, you spend time in and around Kerung.

A short walk, gentle local exploration, and adequate rest can help you adjust to the increasing altitude.

The itinerary may include a local monastery or cultural site, subject to operating conditions.

Do not treat this as a day for hard exercise.

Eat properly, drink fluids, rest well, and inform the guide if you experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual tiredness, or difficulty breathing.

Overnight: Kerung
Altitude: Approximately 2,800 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day6

Kerung to Saga

Today begins the long high-altitude drive across the Tibetan Plateau.

The landscape changes dramatically as you travel toward Saga. Wide valleys, mountain ranges, lakes, grazing animals, and open plateau landscapes become part of the journey.

Altitude increases substantially, and you may notice the thinner air.

The original route information places Saga at around 4,450–4,460 meters, although actual overnight locations and elevations may vary according to the final itinerary.

Take the day slowly.

Overnight: Saga
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Driving: Approximately 6 hours, subject to road conditions

Day7

Saga to Lake Manasarovar

This is one of the most anticipated days of the journey.

The road continues across the high Tibetan Plateau toward Lake Manasarovar.

As you approach the lake, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. On clear days, you may see some of the major Himalayan peaks surrounding the region.

Lake Manasarovar is one of the central spiritual destinations of the pilgrimage.

Take time to appreciate the landscape rather than rushing through the arrival.

Because you are now above 4,500 meters, altitude awareness is essential.

Overnight: Basic accommodation near Lake Manasarovar
Altitude: Approximately 4,558 m according to the source itinerary
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day8

Lake Manasarovar Puja and Drive to Darchen

Wake early for the planned Lake Manasarovar program.

Depending on local conditions and permissions, you can participate in puja or personal prayer beside the lake.

The journey then continues toward Darchen.

Darchen is the main starting point for the Kailash Kora. Before beginning the Kora, organize your day pack carefully.

Your main luggage normally remains at the Darchen accommodation while you carry only the essentials required for the three-day Kora.

Overnight: Darchen
Altitude: Approximately 4,660 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day9

Darchen to Dirapuk – First Day of Kailash Kora

Today begins the main pilgrimage walk.

A short vehicle transfer takes you toward the Tarboche area, from where the walking section begins.

The trail gradually follows the valley toward Dirapuk.

This first walking day is challenging because of the altitude, even though the trail itself may not involve the steepest section of the Kora.

The northern face of Mount Kailash becomes an important visual focus as you approach Dirapuk.

You should walk slowly and maintain a steady rhythm.

Do not compete with other travelers or try to finish the trail too quickly.

Walking: Approximately 12 km
Walking time: Around 5–6 hours, depending on conditions
Overnight: Basic guesthouse at Dirapuk
Altitude: Approximately 4,900 m

The source itinerary describes this as the first Kora day, with approximately 12 km of walking from the Tarboche area to Dirapuk.

Day10

Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk via Dolma La Pass

This is the most demanding day of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

The trail climbs toward Dolma La Pass at approximately 5,630 meters.

The combination of steep sections, cold temperatures, thin air, long walking hours, and changing weather makes this the most physically demanding part of the Kora.

Do not underestimate this day.

Start slowly. Keep your breathing controlled. Take short breaks when needed and follow your guide’s instructions.

After crossing Dolma La, the trail descends toward the area of Gauri Kund before continuing toward Zuthulpuk.

The descent can also be physically demanding because tired legs make uneven terrain harder to manage.

Walking: Approximately 22 km
Walking time: Around 8–9 hours
Highest point: Approximately 5,630 m
Overnight: Basic guesthouse at Zuthulpuk

The original itinerary identifies this as the longest and most challenging Kora day, with the Dolma La crossing at approximately 5,630 meters.

Day11

Zuthulpuk to Darchen and Drive to Saga

The final walking section is generally shorter and less demanding than the previous day.

The trail continues through the valley toward the end point of the Kora.

After completing the walking section, meet the vehicle at the designated pickup point and return to Darchen.

Collect your stored luggage before continuing toward Saga.

After several demanding days at high altitude, reaching the vehicle and beginning the return journey is an important milestone.

Walking: Approximately 8 km
Walking time: Around 2–3 hours
Overnight: Saga
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

The source itinerary describes approximately 8 km of walking before the return drive toward Saga.

Day12

Saga to Kerung

After breakfast, begin the return journey toward Kerung.

The landscape you saw on the way to Mount Kailash now appears from a different perspective.

As you descend, the air gradually becomes thicker and more comfortable.

Use the evening to rest and recover after the Kora.

Overnight: Kerung
Altitude: Approximately 2,800 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day13

Kerung to Kathmandu

Continue toward the Nepal–China border after breakfast.

Complete the necessary exit formalities on the Tibet/China side and then enter Nepal after completing Nepali immigration procedures.

The road journey continues toward Kathmandu.

Arrival time depends on border processing, traffic, road conditions, and the final operating route.

Overnight: Kathmandu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
